Celtic Traditions

Based on the success of the recent Scotland Homecoming Tour, Celtic Force will be doing it again next year.

Yes, and more than once!

Feedback from our first trip was excellent. We’ve been told we’ve hit the ideal formula for distinctive
tours… mixing history & people, faces & places, music & merriment, food & fun, all combined to deliver smiles and lifetime memories. On a scale kept both personal and intimate.lake in scotland

Now under consideration are 3 tours in Scotland and 1 for St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland.

We start next January in Glasgow with the Celtic Connections, the world class music festival. We will enjoy the music in the city over two weekends and see Scotland during the week. This trip will certainly appeal to the Celtic music lover!

In July we’re suggesting “On the Trail of David R Ross” using David’s book “Desire Lines” to guide our course, visiting those places David felt were unique and special. Experience the reenactment of the battle of Killiecrankie, which marked the beginning of the “Jacobiterisings” in the late 1600’s.

Later in 2011 we will partner with one of the musical groups we work with from the US to take their fans to Scotland on a special adventure.

Finally, going to Ireland during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday really needs little hype, it will be a great trip featuring some wonderful landscapes and fantastic music. See Ireland first hand during one of its most glorious times of the year.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF DAVID R. ROSS

When I started reading about Scotland’s history, the thing that drew me in more than anything was the fact that men like Wallace, The Bruce & The Black Douglas actually existed, these men lived for only one thing, to see our country free and to have the ability to control our own destiny.

There are many men in Scotland’s history like the three mentioned above who’s exploits go far beyond the call of duty, but the three I mention are my favourites, especially Sir James Douglas, and it is for this reason that I would like to take you to the last resting place of The Black Douglas, St Bride’s Church, Douglas.

I never knew where Sir James’ last resting place was until I bought DESIRE LINES, (seriously if you’re into Scottish history check this book out) There is a lovely old clock that graces the tower, but as luck would have it, it was away getting repaired when I visited.

The clock is said to have been gifted by Mary, Queen of Scots. The clock, famous for its good timekeeping through the centuries, chimed three minutes before the hour in accordance with the Douglas motto “Jamais Arriere” …never behind.

David Robertson Ross is, and was, a patriotic Scot who loved his country and its people. He was passionate about the rich tapestry of Scottish history. David  specialised in the great Scottish hero Sir William Wallace. He loved Scotland’s past AND present. David believed his writing gave him the opportunity to promote Scotland in a positive light. For David, it was always important to show Scotland as ready to take its equal place in the world of the future.

Johnny Cash had a voice that rumbled as deep as bone and songs that secured his reputation as one of the greats of country music. Now, seven years after his death, his final album, American VI: Ain’t No Grave, will be released on 26 February – which would have been his 78th birthday. But while his millions of fans may have believed Cash to be an all-American outlaw, the man himself was obsessed with his Scottish roots.

The unlikely tale begins in the late 1970s when Cash was returning to the United States and found himself seated next to Major Michael Crichton-Stuart, hereditary keeper of Falkland Palace in the Kingdom of Fife on the east side of Scotland. Cash mentioned that he had heard that his family originated in Scotland. Crichton-Stuart told the singer that he knew this to be the case since there were farms and streets in Fife that still bore the Cash name.

Inspired by the chance meeting on the plane, Cash visited a genealogist and discovered that he was of Scottish descent and that his clan had originated around the 12th century in the Strathmiglo area of Fife. The connection was traced back to when the niece of Malcolm IV (1153-1165) – who was named Cash or Cashel – married the Earl of Fife. The first American Cash connection came in 1612 when mariner William Cash sailed from Scotland to Salem, Massachusetts, with a boatload of pilgrims.

What may to others have appeared a tenuous Celtic connection was for the country star something altogether more profound and meaningful. The shared roots of country music and Celtic music inspired Cash to visit Scotland and he travelled to Fife at least three times – most notably in 1981 when he recorded a Christmas special for US television.

VAIL VALLEY, Colorado — Different cultures celebrate the holidays in different ways. For some, it’s about the food. For others, it’s about gathering with family and loved ones around a warm fire.

In the Celtic tradition, it’s about all of these things. But as important, Cherish the Ladies’ Joanie Madden says, is song and dance.

“Music and the Irish tradition are so closely tied,” she said from the tour bus between performances last week. “It’s the language we speak. All of us in the band come from musical families, it’s something that’s been passed down through the ages.”

Madden and the entire Cherish the Ladies troupe, along with a cast of award-winning dancers and musicians, take the Vilar Center stage Monday night with their “Celtic Christmas” show.

“When it came time for Christmas in our households, it was all about gathering with friends and family for a jam session,” Madden says. “That’s what we bring to the audience with our show. We’re having a great time up there — lots of laughing on stage. It’s really a social event for everyone in the theater.

Last March Eric & I had the privilege of visiting Chris (Christine Macleod) at the Weavers Cottage in Scotland. We hope to have this as a stop on the upcoming tour in March. Chris is the person that made the Wallace tartan that is worn by David R Ross. She picked the plants and made the dyes from places associated with William Wallace and used to weave this one of a kind garment on the loom featured in the piece. Cool, hey?
